Why I work for Okanagan Specialty Fruits

Not many people are as lucky as I was to grow up in the orchard-filled Okanagan, where I had the opportunity to help get delicious BC apples and cherries off the trees and into the hands of fruit lovers everywhere. Whether picking fruit or working in the packing house (even the icy cold room!), every step of the way is a rewarding experience.

One of the orchards I had the pleasure of working in was that of OSF founders Neal & Louisa Carter. Orchardists are salt-of-the-earth people, and the Carters are no exception. They truly love what they do, and raise each year’s harvest with immense care and hard work. Always out in the orchard working longer hours and doing tougher jobs than anyone, the Carters’ passion is infectious.Joel at the NW Hort Show

So, when the opportunity arose to again work under their direction, I was thrilled. As much as I enjoyed working on the farm, this time around I benefit from another of the Carters’ attributes – innovation! To work with such great people towards a goal that’s so easy to get behind – helping people to eat more apples – is an exciting opportunity I feel privileged be part of.

As OSF’s Marketing and Communication Specialist, I’m well aware that some consumers are wary of biotech-enhanced foods. We work very hard every day to help consumers understand that biotech enhanced foods are both completely safe and extremely beneficial to farmers, consumers and the environment.

The commitment OSF makes to educate the public on Arctic® apples and biotechnology is quite remarkable – and even more so when considering our company’s limited size and resources. Still, everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion, which is one of the main reasons OSF will voluntarily label Arctic® apples.

OSF is made up of people who love the fruit industry and are committed to providing value, education and choice to both consumers and producers. That’s why I love working for Okanagan Specialty Fruits and am proud to be part of the team working hard to bring Arctic® apples – and many other great products – to market.
