Welcoming the newest members of our science team

We are excited to introduce you to our newest members of the science team! Aruna Wickramarathna joined us as an Assistant Scientist in November, and Jordan Hannah became our lab technician earlier this month.

sciteamupdated.v2Aruna is our man with the plan when it comes to applying advanced technology to improve tree fruits. Aruna grew up in Sri Lanka before moving to Canada in the middle of winter for post graduate studies; he describes the 28⁰C change in temperature as a shock, to say the least! He has worked in molecular biology for 13 years and loves that science gives him the opportunity to find creative solutions. When it comes to apples, Aruna likes to keep it simple, preferring fresh slices.

As our newest member, Jordan has jumped in feet first, showing great enthusiasm for his work. He grew up in Yorkton, SK and graduated with a Biotechnology Diploma in 2003, right in Saskatoon where our lab is located. Jordan is excited to be working with plants again and feels the best part of science is seeing innovative ideas come to life. Jordan highly recommends trying apple pie with a cinnamon bun crust, like this recipe.

Both of these family men love sports, cricket for Aruna, hockey and football for Jordan, and the similarities don’t stop there. When asked about working with Okanagan Specialty Fruits they agreed that joining a company that openly shares knowledge to help advance the team’s work is at once motivating and inspiring. Jordan and Aruna are both excited to know they are helping reduce food waste by working on Arctic® apples and other tree fruits (though no hints were given as to what we can expect next!).

Welcome to the team Gentlemen! We look forward to your progress!
