Arctic® Fuji – another step closer

Arctic® Fuji apples are now one step closer to U.S. deregulation! Following the submission of our initial application to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Service (APHIS) requesting nonregulated status (commercial approval), we are excited to announce that OSF’s Arctic® Fuji petition  is now available to the public. This application contains data on the introduction and testing of the nonbrowning trait in Fuji variety apples which uses the same safe, beneficial technology as the Arctic® Granny and Arctic® Golden. This APHIS petition differs from the petition submitted for our initial varieties because it is considered an

Arctic® apples approach 2nd U.S. comment period

Arctic® apples are continuing their steady progress towards deregulation and commercialization, with the second U.S. public comment period expected to open this spring. This past year, we saw public comment periods in both Canada (May-July) and the U.S. (July-Sept.) successfully conclude, receiving over 5,000 comments in total. It was certainly an eventful 2012, but we expect 2013 to be even more “fruitful”, and here’s why: While the first 60-day U.S. public comment shared our 163 page petition requesting deregulation, two new documents will be made publically available for the second comment period. The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), a branch of the

Looking back – an eventful 2012 for OSF

As a result of a busy 2012, Okanagan Specialty Fruits has never been closer to bringing nonbrowning Arctic® apples to market! The regulatory processes for biotech foods in both the United States and Canada are extremely rigorous and it typically takes several years (at least!) to gain approvals. This past year OSF hit major milestones in the deregulation process in both countries. 2012 was especially rewarding after all the hard work our team has delivered since the company’s founding in 1996. In Canada, things really started to kick off on May 2nd when the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) posted

Addressing common misconceptions of Arctic® orchards and fruit

During the recent U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) public comment period on Arctic® Granny and Arctic® Golden apples, a number of re-occurring misconceptions arose which are addressed in this blog. Agricultural biotechnology, which consumers are self-admittedly uniformed about, is a complicated subject. When there’s a new product that utilizes this technology, myths and incorrect information commonly follow. Biotechnology is a polarizing topic for many and unfortunately, this has led to a vocal minority propagating erroneous statements that mislead the general public.  Perhaps the most widely spread myth is that Arctic® apple orchards will cross-pollinate with organic orchards, causing them to

USDA comment period on Arctic® apples comes to a close

Arctic® Grannies and Arctic® Goldens are both one step closer to market with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) concluding their 60-day comment period yesterday (September 11, 2012). Okanagan Specialty Fruit’s petition applying for the deregulation of our nonbrowning apples was released for public review and input on July 13 and the past two months have been a very exciting time for our small company! There has been a tremendous amount of attention from the media and even more from consumers, who submitted around three times the number of comments on the Arctic® apple petition as the nine other biotech crops undergoing

CFIA comment period on Arctic® apples comes to a close

Early May, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) posted the “Notice of Submission” for the deregulation of Arctic® apples on their website and asked the public for their comments. This comment period concluded yesterday (July 3) and we want to extend our appreciation and thanks to everyone who submitted positive statements in support of Arctic® apples. This represents a big step toward bringing our nonbrowning apples to market in Canada (learn more here) and we were extremely encouraged by many of the letters that were submitted. One such letter that we are pleased to share with you comes from Dr. David
