When Apple (and other) Trees Bloom

The arrival of spring in the northern hemisphere can be a moving target. Too early and frost can be a risk factor, while a late spring can push the growing season. Whenever it arrives, fruit tree blossoms are always a welcome sight. Most of us look at an orchard and see a blanket of beautiful flowers. To the untrained eye it can be hard to differentiate the blooms of apricots from those of an apple or peach. Lucky for you, we can help. For those in the pacific northwest, here’s a guide to what fruit trees are blooming when. Fruit

Modern Apple Growing

Science and technology are advancing at a rapid pace, making life easier and more convenient. Agriculture sees its share of these benefits but the true advantage is realized when we can find our way to a place where old and new meet in harmony. Apple growing has changed. Sprawling trees have been replaced by smaller, more productive ones in high-density orchards. Gone is water-wasting overhead irrigation in favor of more efficient drip systems. Through it all, a few things remain the same – sometimes getting a helping hand. Grafted, not seeded Apple seeds are a genetically creative group. If planted,

Arctic® Fuji petition requesting deregulation submitted

Arctic® Fuji is poised to follow in the footsteps of OSF’s first nonbrowning apple varieties, Arctic® Golden and Arctic® Granny, which were approved for commercial sale in February 2015. On December 31st, OSF formally submitted a petition to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) requesting the deregulation of the next nonbrowning variety – Arctic® Fuji. U.S. to deregulate Arctic® apples!

Okanagan Specialty Fruits is thrilled to share big news – the first nonbrowning Arctic® apple varieties are about to be deregulated in the United States! This milestone is nearly two decades in the making, as Arctic® Golden and Arctic® Granny apples represent OSF’s first products since our inception in 1996. We could not have achieved this without our small-but-mighty, grower-led team and all our supporters in the agriculture and biotech industries. And, of course, all the consumers who told us they can’t wait for nonbrowning apples! Earlier today, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Services (APHIS)

Good as gold: Arctic® Goldens can revitalize Golden Delicious market

Golden Delicious apples, one of the world’s favorite varieties for the past century, have been slipping in popularity over the last few decades. Despite having a juicy, sweet taste and being easy to grow, they do have some notable weaknesses that have hurt their stock. Luckily, the nonbrowning trait Arctic® Goldens provide directly addresses these shortcomings and can restore some of the Golden luster that’s worn off! Most everyone knows conventional Goldens readily show every single bruise. The Golden’s light yellow color makes any discoloration more noticeable than browning on red or green apples and a huge amount of Golden

Watch: Arctic® apple stays white!

With Arctic® apples still undergoing deregulation, it can sometimes be a challenge to demonstrate the impact of the nonbrowning trait. But seeing is believing, so take a look at our 24-hour time-lapsed video comparing a sliced Arctic® Golden to a conventional Golden Delicious. We think you’ll agree that the difference is clear! Even after just a short amount of time, the conventional fruit’s flesh becomes brown and unappealing. It’s probably not an apple that you, or your picky kids, would consider eating. The Arctic® Golden, on the other hand, maintains its original color throughout the entire 24 hours without the
