Good as gold: Arctic® Goldens can revitalize Golden Delicious market

Golden Delicious apples, one of the world’s favorite varieties for the past century, have been slipping in popularity over the last few decades. Despite having a juicy, sweet taste and being easy to grow, they do have some notable weaknesses that have hurt their stock. Luckily, the nonbrowning trait Arctic® Goldens provide directly addresses these shortcomings and can restore some of the Golden luster that’s worn off!

Most everyone knows conventional Goldens readily show every single bruise. The Golden’s light yellow color makes any discoloration more noticeable than browning on red or green apples and a huge amount of Golden fruit is wasted due to superficial damage. Obviously, this is reason number one why a nonbrowning Golden makes perfect sense, but the value is much more than skin deep!Arctic Goldens

Not only are many Goldens lost to bruising throughout the supply chain, but they’re also one of the few commercial apple variety that is warmed prior to packing. This may seem like a strange thing to do, but without warming conventional Goldens before sorting and packing, the amount of fruit that gets damaged would be even higher.

When the fruit is warmed it makes the skin more elastic and less likely to bruise; however, it also softens, or in ‘industry lingo’, it loses pressure. Packing this way results in less bruising, but it also means that when a consumer bites into the Golden Delicious, some of the crunch is lost so they’re not getting the best eating experience this fruit has to offer. Plus, Golden Delicious apples are already softer than many varieties, and when they permanently lose even more of their crunch, the result is a declining market.

With an Arctic® Golden, not only can you skip the warming and cooling process entirely – and the significant costs that come with it – consumers also end up with a crunchier, tastier apple!

Goldens are already a grower favorite because the trees are very productive and fairly easy to manage in all kinds of weather and soil, and now they can become a favorite of packers as well. Combine that with significantly less waste and a better eating experience and it’s easy to see why, with Arctic® Goldens, everyone wins!
