Agricultural biotechnology – transparency is essential!

With the benefits of crop biotechnology clearer than ever, it makes sense that media and public perception is increasingly positive. A recent article from the UK suggests the debate over biotech crops has “grown up” due to the willingness of scientists and biotech companies to be more open and transparent.

Transparency is an important quality for companies that deal with such complex subject matter as biotechnology. We believe that it’s our job to share the ins and outs of our technology in a way that everyone can comprehend. Really, who better than those who understand the technology best – the companies and scientists themselves – to serve this role? Magnifying Glass

A 2006 article from the Institute of Environmental Sciences spoke to the importance of using “practical tool(s) to make biotechnology debates less confused…and more scientifically transparent.” It goes on to suggest that a mechanism of “learning-by-questions” is a particularly useful model and it’s one that we at Okanagan Specialty Fruits strive to follow.

As we have found through third party research that the more people learn about Arctic® Apples, the more they support them and want to try them for themselves. This is no coincidence, as consumers want to know what they put in their bodies. If the communications lines are open, and the scientific evidence showing the safety and value of biotech crops is readily available, it can make a world of difference.

The more consumers learn about biotechnology, the more they support it, so how can companies afford not to be open and transparent? Even small companies like ours are well served by putting an emphasis on open communication. Engage with us on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn and let us help you learn about what we do!
