Scab Resistance in Apple

Apple Scab (Venturia inaequalis) is a common fungal problem that requires growers to spray susceptible varieties up to 10 times per season. This is a high cost activity and one with significant environmental impact. Even with a high number of sprays, control can be difficult.

Scab resistance in apples has been achieved through cross breeding resistant crab apple varieties with commercial varieties. However, the resulting varieties have not been of high quality and are not well accepted by consumers.

OSF plans to use the Scab resistant gene identified in crab apples and introduce it into high demand and popularized commercial varieties. This would again follow the precision breeding approach whereby only apple genes would be used to manipulate apple varieties resulting in unique new varieties offering Scab resistance.
