Health & Wellness Apple
Apples are a widely consumed, rich source of phytochemicals (quercetins, catechin, phloridzin, and chlorogenic acid), and epidemiological studies have linked the consumption of apples with reduce risk of some cancers, cardiovascular diseases, asthma and diabetes. Apples have been found to have very strong antioxidant activity, inhibit cancer cell proliferation, decrease lipid oxidation and lower cholesterol.
OSF is now working with other collaborators to take this to a new level of health and wellness, whereby apples become a function food or apple products are used in the making of nutriceuticals. Although this work is just getting started, it could offer some exciting opportunities for new and unique apple varieties.
