A major impediment to employing genetic engineering and precision breeding in peaches has been the inability to transform peaches. Having no tools to specifically alter the fruit’s DNA has left all new trait work in peaches in the hands of conventional breeders.
OSF has achieved initial success in developing a peach transformation system, which we continue to evolve to improve its efficiency and methods. This initial success means we can now begin to introduce new genetic traits in peaches and develop new, unique peach varieties. To date, our focus has been on finding a solution that allows peach to resist the plum pox virus that is devastating the peach production industry. We also plan to target peach mealiness and browning.
